New Year Mochitsuki, TIEC
|
|
Today is quite a busy day. After hosting lunch, we joined New Year Mochitsuki festival held by TIEC.
Below is an ectract from another website.
Mochitsuki is the traditional mochi-pounding ceremony in Japan.
Polished glutinous rice is soaked overnight and cooked.
The cooked rice is pounded with wooden mallets (kine) in a traditional mortar (usu). Two people will alternate the work, one pounding and the other turning and wetting the mochi. They must keep a steady rhythm or they may accidentally injure one another with the heavy kine.
The sticky mass is then formed into various shapes (usually a sphere or cube).
Kinako mochi is a mochi dish that is traditionally made on New Year's Day for luck. This style of mochi preparation includes roasting the mochi over a fire or stove, and then dipping it into a mixture of soy sauce, water and sugar, before finally briefly coating it in kinako (soy flour).
There's also hanetsuki played during the festival. Adapted from Wikipedia :
Hanetsuki (羽根突き, 羽子突き) is a Japanese traditional game, similar to badminton except there is no net, and is played with a rectangular wooden paddle, called a hagoita, and a brightly-coloured shuttlecock. Often played by girls at the New Year, the game can be played in two fashions, by one person attempting to keep the shuttlecock aloft as long as possible, or by the two people batting it back and forth. Girls who fail to hit the shuttlecock get marked on the face with India Ink. Traditionally, the longer the shuttlecock remains in the air, the greater protection from mosquitoes the players will receive during the coming year. Although Hanetsuki is not as popular as it used to be, decorative hagoita are commonly sold throughout Japan.

Tenno Tanjobi (Emperor's Birthday)
|
|
23 Dec is a Japanese national holiday to celebrate the Emperor's birthday. The present emperor, Emperor Akihito was born on 23 Dec 1933. On this day, the Imperial Palace is opened for public. Well wishers gathered in front of the palace balcony to wave tiny Japanese flags and the Emperor and his family would appear and wave back to the crowd.
We wanted to join this year's crowd but have to defer, thinking of the small kids, freezing weather and huge crowd. Instead, we went only to the north garden, taking pictures of Nijubashi bridge, Sakuradamon gate and looking at the palace from afar.
